Picture Book Series
Curious George, Fancy Nancy, Babar, Madeline, and Scaredy Squirrel. These are just a few of the hundreds of picture book characters that appear in sequels or series. The Picture Book Database tracks over 1000 series and books with companion titles. If you would like a complete list, please email us.
- If there is an official series name, it is used (e.g. Fancy Nancy)
- If there is not an official name, the name of a character is used (e.g. "Farmer Brown's Animals" for the Doreen Cronin/Betsy Lewin series that includes Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type.
- If two books are companion titles, we assigned a series name to make finding the companion title easier.
- If there are two popular characters or series with a similar name, the author's name is in parentheses behind the series name. For example, Max books by Maira Kalman are identified by "Max (Kalman)."
- The type of animal the character is if often added for clarification (e.g. The series name for the Olivia books by Ian Falconer is "Olivia the Pig."
Notable Exceptions
- Most of the books written by Ezra Jack Keats have interrelated characters and are set in the same neighborhood. We have assigned the series name "Keats’s Neighborhood," which was borrowed from the treasury of books published by Viking.
- Australian author/illustrator Alison Lester created a series of interrelated books with the characters Celeste, Clive, Ernie, Frank, Nicky, Tessa that does not have an official series title. We refer to it as "Alison Lester's Gang."
