Age Levels

We consider picture books to be an "all ages" format. They have unlimited potential, and as Anthony Browne says "The best ones leave a tantalising gap between the pictures and the words, a gap that is filled by the reader’s imagination, adding so much to the excitement of reading a book."

However, it is often helpful to have guidelines when selecting books for certain readers. We assign four age groups, but encourage subscribers to use their own judgment:

• AGES 0-4: Suitable for babies, toddlers, and preschoolers.
• AGES 4-6: Suitable for preschool and kindergarten students.
• AGES 5-10: Suitable for kindergarten through grade 4
• OLDER READERS: Suitable for elementary, middle and high school students, depending on how the books are integrated. The content is often sophisticated.

NOTE: Ages 4-6 was recently added. We will be reviewing titles over the coming months and reassigning many titles currently in the 5-10 group.
