About the Service

The Picture Book Database is a unique work. The service combines data from dozens of online and print sources, thousands of picture books, and countless publisher, author, and illustrator websites. Over two years in development, this tool fills a unique void as there are few dependable picture book resources that help readers explore the possibilities of the format. The service brings readers and picture books together, helping you find the best picture books in one place, without having to consult multiple resources.

We developed a typology to organize picture books into categories specific to the format, tracking data for over 40 fields. We strive to obtain as much information about each title in our database as possible. In addition to standard bibliographic data (author/illustrator, publisher, dates and subjects), we also track the following:

  • artistic media and style
  • character education, literary devices, literacy tie-ins
  • categories, genres, and formats
  • series and characters
  • original publisher/title/language (for titles published outside the U.S.)
  • country of origin
  • age ranges
  • records link to WorldCat and Google Books

Our goal is to make this service an affordable option for everyone. Please see Subscribe (Pricing) in the navigation menu to review subscription plans or to subscribe. The database is an always-growing-ever-changing type of service. When additional information is discovered, existing records are updated.
